SAG Group invests in rheocasting innovation: New research and development center in Salzburg

The SAG Group is planning to build a state-of-the-art research and test center for rheocasting technology at its founding location in Lend/Salzburg. With construction due to start in January 2025 and completion planned for the middle of the year, the center will include testing facilities, a laboratory and office workstations. An investment of around 750,000 euros will be made in the first phase, with further investments already being considered. The aim is to further develop rheocasting technology and expand its application potential.

Focus on innovation and sustainability

Rheocasting
, an innovative casting process in which aluminum is processed in a semi-solid state, enables the production of lightweight components with outstanding material properties. The SAG Group has developed a pioneering role in this area and brought the technology to series production maturity.

“Our aim is to think ahead and give our customers a competitive edge through innovation,” explains Karin Exner-Wöhrer, CEO of the SAG Group.

The new development center will create the basis for further optimization of rheocasting technology, particularly with regard to applications in the automotive industry. By using rheocasting components instead of steel, vehicles can be up to 60 percent lighter, which significantly improves both range and energy efficiency.

A global company with a local focus

The SAG Group is a globally active company with headquarters in Lend/Salzburg. With over 1,100 employees at nine locations in Europe, Mexico and the USA, the Austrian family-owned company has a strong international presence. It is considered the market leader for aluminum tanks for heavy trucks and also offers lightweight components, cryogenic tank systems and compressed air tanks.

In 2023, the SAG Group achieved a turnover of 211 million euros with an export ratio of over 90 percent. SAG has received several awards for its technological innovations that actively contribute to climate protection, most recently the GreenTech Award 2023/24.

With the new research center, the SAG Group is not only investing in modern infrastructure, but also in the innovative strength of its employees.

“We want to further strengthen our position on the global market and at the same time emphasize our local roots in Lend,” concludes Exner-Wöhrer.
