German industry threatened by shortage of raw materials - complete outflow of scrap possible due to US tariffs on aluminum imports
The German aluminum industry warns of dramatic consequences of the new US tariffs on aluminum that have come into force. While primary aluminum and aluminum-intensive products are subject to high tariffs, aluminum scrap remains duty-free - with fatal consequences for the European market. US companies are buying scrap at top prices, leading to increasing shortages and even complete sell-offs in Germany and Europe.
EU must introduce export duties on aluminium scrap
Rob van Gils, President of Aluminium Germany, emphasizes:
"The German government must advocate export duties on aluminium scrap in Brussels in order to stop the uncontrolled outflow and ensure fair competitive conditions for German recycling companies. Without swift and decisive action from the EU, the structures of the circular economy that have been created over the years will be destroyed and companies will be forced out of the market."
Transformation goals at risk
Van Gils adds:
"Companies are already feeling the pinch. If we don't act immediately, the scrap shortage will worsen dramatically. This not only jeopardizes the expansion of the circular economy, but also undermines Europe's decarbonization goals and raw material security."
