Three Tons and More: Why the Turkish Foundry Industry is Crucial for Europe
Thanks to its geographic location and competitive production costs, Turkey is an important partner for the European die-casting industry. Casting production increased from one million tons in 2006 to over three million tons in 2022. The industry invests in modern technologies, diversifies its products, and strives for sustainability and digital transformation.
The Turkish foundry industry has shown strong growth in recent years, and since 2018, Turkey has even surpassed Italy in the CAEF country rankings. "The country has become an indispensable partner for the European die-casting industry, as was evident at EUROGUSS in Nuremberg earlier this year," says Christopher Boss, Executive Director of EUROGUSS. "Turkey has long been among the top exhibitors and visitors here." More than 50 companies exhibit, including Döktaş Dökümcülük, Aslar Pres Döküm Sanayi ve Ticaret, and Süperpar Otomotiv.
According to In Fonderia, the magazine of the Italian Foundry Association Assofond, Turkey's total casting production has tripled from one million tons in 2006 to over three million tons in 2022. This development is understandable upon closer examination: thanks to its perfect geographic location, Turkey has become a bridge between Europe and Asia. This makes it a popular location for production and supply chains, including manufacturers of (die) cast parts.
Turkish Foundries are Broadly Positioned
Competitive production costs and well-trained specialists also contribute to Turkey's attractiveness. The country has invested in modern die-casting technologies, thereby gaining the trust of international customers from various industries, including the automotive and mechanical engineering sectors. The demand for lightweight parts in the automotive sector plays into the hands of this export-oriented country, which is diligently investing in the production of high-strength aluminum cast parts for electric mobility.
The diversification of exported products is also exciting. In addition to the automotive sector, Turkish foundries have expanded their presence in other industries such as aerospace, medical technology, and the energy sector. This diversification makes the country less dependent on individual markets.
Foundry Association Promotes Digital Transformation
The Turkish Foundry Association TÜDÖKSAD offers foundries training programs that range from basic foundry processes to the latest developments in environmentally friendly technologies and automation. Due to increasing production elements, the transformation to "Smart Foundries" and the introduction of Industry 4.0 solutions are strategic core elements to remain future-proof.
