“If you can`t win, change the rules of the game”
The Mexican economy has been growing rapidly for several years. Mexico is now the 12th largest economy in the world. In 2023, Mexico overtook China as the USA's largest export nation for the first time. It is only due to the even more impressive development in China that Mexico is not attracting even more international attention than it already does.
One of the most important aluminium foundry regions
The Mexican aluminium foundry industry in particular is also benefiting from this development. Mexico is now one of six important aluminium foundry regions worldwide (USA, Europe, China, Japan, India, Mexico). 26 new foundries were built in Mexico in the period from 2010 to 2016.During the current crisis (2018 to date), Mexico has seen the strongest growth of the six major aluminium foundry regions.
Special interest from automotive companies
In a turbulent environment with multidimensional political, economic and industrial influences as well as a rapidly changing automotive industry, the global aluminium foundry industry is also facing major challenges. Both opportunities and risks are real and require a high level of management attention. This also applies for Mexico. In addition to the general trend towards lightweight automotive construction, the Mexican foundry industry will benefit in particular from the fact that many major automotive companies are aligning or have already aligned their strategic direction towards Mexico.
Die Casting Congress in Mexico
The Global Foundry Cluster, headed by Guillermo Ibanez Ortega and supported by Haitian and EUROGUSS Mexico, took this development as an opportunity to organise the first Die Casting Congress in Mexico. In the context of the current situation, the congress focussed on the expected long-term technological and economic opportunities and risks for the Mexican foundry industry. The quality of the selected presentations was very good.
Presentation: Strategic approaches for the Mexican HPDC industry from an external perspective
This resulted in assessments, expectations and recommendations for the Mexican foundry industry on the following topics:
- Performance (EBIT, Operational Excellence)
- Know-how/Skills (Company, Employees)
- Product Portfolio (ICE → BEV)
- Strategy (individual)
- Partnerships (National, International)
The intensification of the good cooperation/partnership between Mexico and Europe was identified and recommended as a key guarantee of success for the future as well. Together, Mexico and Europe are in a position to achieve the goals of their customers (OEMs), even in the face of international competition. Europe and Mexico are on the right track, as this congress has shown.
“Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, working together is success.”
