Electromobility: BEVs on the advance
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are continuing to gain ground in Germany: according to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), the number of new registrations in June 2023 was around 64 percent higher than in the same month last year, reaching 53,000 units. New BEV registrations thus developed much more dynamically than the overall passenger car market.
In contrast, the figures for plug-in hybrids (PHEV) declined. 15,900 newly registered units represent a decline of 39 percent. Therefore, the market for electric passenger cars as a whole grew by only 18 percent compared to the same month last year. New registrations in June totalled 69,000, and in the first six months of the year 299,500 e-cars were registered. That is 2 percent less than in the same period last year.
Gap to pre-crisis level remains large
Across all drive types, 280,100 new passenger cars were registered in Germany in June, 25 percent more than in the same month last year. Despite this significant increase, the overall market volume remains low. After the first half of 2023, the German passenger car market is 13 percent up (1.4 million units). But the gap to the pre-crisis level remains large: compared to the first six months of 2019, new registrations are 24 percent lower.

The reason for this is primarily the efforts to ease tensions in the supply chains. At the same time, despite the increase in the first half of the year, we are still well below the pre-Corona crisis level (10 percent). Looking at the overall economic situation and the development of new orders, it is to be expected that the high growth rates will weaken soon. The high order backlog is slowly being reduced, but is still well above the long-term average.
Hildegard Müller, President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry
The production level in German factories in June was higher than in the same month of the previous year for the fourteenth time in a row. Last month, 389,900 passenger cars rolled off the production lines. This is 31 percent more than in June 2022.
Exports developed similarly to production in June: 296,500 passenger cars were delivered to customers all over the world. This is 28 percent more than in the same month last year and 32 percent more than in the same period last year.
