ADAC survey: The electric car is particularly popular among the younger generation

A recent survey by ADAC Autoversicherung shows that every second person under the age of 30 is open to buying an electric car. Driving an electric vehicle is very popular among the younger generation. A high range of the vehicle and specially adapted insurance cover are particularly important.

The attitude towards electric cars differs between generations: electric cars are more popular with young people than with older people. This is the result of a survey conducted online in June 2024 among 1,000 adult drivers. According to the survey, 29 percent of drivers aged between 18 and 29 expect their next car to be an electric car. By contrast, only nine percent of drivers aged 50 and over do.

Every second young driver is open to buying an electric car

Among drivers under the age of 30, one in two are open to buying an electric car. In addition to the 29 percent who “definitely or probably” want to opt for an electric vehicle for their next car, a further 28 percent “possibly” want to buy an electric car. Among respondents aged 50 and over, 18% are “possibly” open to buy one.

Young people like driving electric cars

The survey also reveals that young people like to drive electric cars. Twelve percent of under-30s report that they regularly drive electric cars. In contrast, four percent of those aged 50 and over do so. Those who have already driven an electric car but do not own one are also positive. Almost two thirds said they enjoyed driving an electric car. Among drivers under the age of 50, the figure is as high as 69 percent.

Long range is most important to drivers

Important criteria for respondents when buying an electric car are range and purchase price. In a direct comparison of the two criteria, 38 percent rated a long range as more important, while a third preferred a lower purchase price. For drivers who already regularly drive an electric car, range is particularly relevant. For 68 percent, it is more important than the purchase price, while 24 percent rate the price higher.

Special insurance desired for electric cars

According to the survey, 88 percent of respondents would consider fully comprehensive insurance to be “very important” or “fairly important” when buying an electric car. In addition, 83 percent of respondents said that they consider special insurance cover for electric cars to be “very” or “fairly” important.
